Every once in a while I hear the echo of Kat singing and playing guitar when I walk down first avenue Seattle

I’m Kat’s only niece, and I think about her all the time. Every so often I find myself coming back to this website and looking through the photos of her life, her artwork, and all the places she travelled.

When I was little, she would play guitar for me, read me stories, and we would write stories together. I recently found a note she had written me years ago, and reading it again made me miss her so much that I found myself back here.

    It said:

    If someone else
    achieved something
    you desire
    so can you
    because you are
    somebody

    Ever heard of the cat
    who could walk thru walls?
    Because no one told it
    that it couldn’t

    I dreamt of walking
    through walls . . .
    I avoid people that
    tell me I can’t
    and only keep friends
    who believe that I can.

Reading those words now, as an adult, means something different to me. She never got to know me as the person I’m becoming, and as I get older, I feel her absence in new ways. I play piano now, and I’m learning how to make my own music. Sometimes I wonder if that creative part of me comes from her. I wish she could see it. I like to think she’s up in heaven with Grandma Ida and Grandpa Ray.

When I think of her, I always remember how she made me feel as a child. She made me feel seen, and that is something I will carry with me forever.

I’m so grateful this website exists. Every so often, I come back here to look through these memories and feel a little closer to her.
